Improved cybersecurity helps paper manufacturer extend control system lifespan
A leading paper and packaging design and production company were looking to improve their outdated and vulnerable production control systems. They commissioned a full OT security risk assessment for their paper mills and distribution facilities before investing in such a large upgrade. The aim was to establish and deploy comprehensive OT network visibility, implement tighter network protections and segmentations, in addition to safeguarding their vulnerable control systems.
Challenges
Whilst fully aware that their paper mills had outdated control systems and existing system vulnerabilities, the risk assessment also uncovered other issues that the customer was not even aware of:
- Inconsistencies and misconfigurations across the OT networks.
- A large number of non-business devices such as Amazon Fire TV sticks, Rokus, and other personal wireless systems connected to the production networks, adding unnecessary risks.
- A high volume of external network traffic to and from foreign IP domains.
- The use of insecure protocols, including Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
Solution
Based on the findings of the risk assessment, the customer decided on a more comprehensive cybersecurity solution rather than an upgrade to their existing system. They selected an OT cybersecurity platform and managed services for two of their paper mills and a number of their distribution facilities, with a plan for future deployment to the remainder of their operational facilities later on.
